Boston Harvard Yard - The Harvard Yard showcases the rich history of Cambridge through the different historic structures and buildings of the university and of the city.
The Harvard Yard is located right at the heart of the Harvard University. A tour around this 25 acre or 10 hectare yard will show you different old and new buildings in Cambridge aside from the University dorms and campus buildings.
Standing at the centermost part of the yard is the Tercentenary Theater where most of the commencement exercises and other curricular activities are held all through out the year.
The western part of the yard locally known as the Old Yard is a home for freshman dormitories owned by the university. The oldest academic building in the entire United States, the Massachusetts Hall is also located in this area. The Harvard University president runs his offices at the ground floors of this historic hall that was built in 1720.
The famous Harvard University Hall that once witnessed the campus sit-ins in 1960s and the Harvard Hall are located near the Old Yard. The Harvard Hall was originally a huge university library that was converted to classrooms after it was caught in a fire and then rebuilt in 1766. The present main libraries of the university are located along the sides of the Harvard Yard. These are the Pusey Library annex, the Widener Library, the Houghton Library of manuscripts and rare books, and the Lamont Library for undergraduate references.
The Phillips Brookes House, Holden Chapel, and other academic halls of the University occupy the other parts of the Harvard Yard. The university business meetings are regularly held at the Loeb House and at alumni associations’ headquarter--the Wadsworth House, both located along the Harvard Yard.
These are just some of the historic structures in the Harvard Yard. The old buildings share the yard with other newer buildings that are scattered around the yard. The new buildings have unique modern designs that still preserve the historic nature of the old yard buildings.
